See red kites

Red kites tend to prefer open farmland and forest edge areas. They can often be seen floating near busy trunk roads, where they are likely to be keeping an eye out for an easy dinner of road kill.

Tollie Red Kites

From Winter 2009, a dedicated red kite viewing facility will be open on Brahan Estate near Dingwall. Every day at Tollie Red Kites, food is put out for the birds who come in to feed, enabling you to enjoy close up views from the building. Once the facility has been opened, further details will be posted.

• Once a day, a small amount of carrion is put out for the red kites and they come in to feed, much like garden birds come to feeders at a bird table.
• The amount put out is small, so as the kites can never come to depend upon it as their sole food source.
• The food is placed out early in the afternoon, again to ensure the kites don’t come to depend on it (they will have to hunt in the morning for natural sources of carrion)
